THE BROKEN MIRROR AND THE ONE LIGHT
It is said that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. Over 7 billion souls inhabit this planet, each of them with uniquely different experiences: thoughts, fears, hopes and dreams. But all of us, along with all life on Earth, are united in sharing one world, one Spirit of Life.
Whatever our different views may be of our world and its future, one thing that makes today different from any other time in history is that over 95% of the world’s wealth: assets, technology and media is now owned by less than 1% of the global population. Potentially this is a very dangerous situation because whoever controls the flow of information controls the narrative and thereby has undue influence on the general public perception of reality. Not surprisingly many today question global policies that affect us all. Thinking of that here are two quotes from the French philosopher, Voltaire:
“The more often a stupidity is repeated, the more it gets the appearance of wisdom.”
“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”
History has certainly proven the truth of Voltaire’s words.
The human world is like a broken mirror, yet even though it is shattered and fragmented, every tiny piece can still reflect the same light. This is the same Light that streamed from the beginning of creation when God said, ‘Let there be Light!’
The connection to God’s Light of Love and Creativity is embedded in the consciousness of all people. In the Bible this is reflected in the Ten Commandments, which Jesus encapsulated into two basic expressions: love and respect for our Creator and love and respect for our fellow beings. By this we are living in the illumination of conscience all sharing the awareness of one Spirit of Life given to us by our Creator. This enlightenment is the only real basis for true peace, equality and compassionate living. Only through love and respect for others, for our planet and for all life on Earth can we build a better world for everyone.
Indigenous peoples have long known that life is a gift from our Creator and that all creatures share one Spirit. Everything is connected in the Web of Life. We are guests on this world not its masters.
As with the story of Jesus, who suffered for his message of God’s love, so the story of the Indigenous Peoples of America is both an example of the greater reality of a Creator and also a warning of the destructiveness of human greed and wrong values. Once we were caretakers of the Earth but now collectively we are careless exploiters of the planet. This is an unsustainable situation in any terms. To change we must look beyond and connect to the greater reality of our Creator.
For all today who look for the Light of Hope, Freedom and Truth, the words of Oren Lyons Faith-keeper of the Onondaga Nation, in a speech to the United Nations in 1992 are worth us all bearing in mind.
“The Original Instructions are natural laws that were given to our people by the Creator, including the idea of respecting all things as part of the sacred circle of life. We are the generations with the responsibility and option to choose the path with a future for our children. We must join hands with the rest of creation, and speak of common sense, responsibility, brotherhood and peace.”
